Alex Foster
Hi there, I'm Alex.
I'm a 37-year-old freestyler from Warrington, UK.
I first started skating back in 2002, although at the time I was mainly the filmer for my friends’ videos. Back then, I was more of an all-rounder (as in, equally terrible at everything) than a freestyler.
I first got into freestyle in 2004, following the release of the BFSN Championships. For me, this was a revolution. Whilst I was aware of freestyle, most of the stuff available at the time was from the 80s and seemed hyper competitive, but the BFSN Championships were a breath of fresh air!
This wasn't a hyper competitive event. It was a group of friends showcasing their best tricks, supporting one and other and having a great time, with a splash of traditional British silliness. This seemed like a freestyle scene that I could be a part of.
The minute I finished watching that video I picked up my board and started to learn railflips and fingerflips right there in my house. My parents were decidedly unamused by the subsequent damage from my repeated failings, but I didn't let that deter me - I was hooked!
Despite growing up in Warrington, a UK town with a long and rich skateboarding history, the local skateparks sucked - making them perfect for freestyle! Over the years that followed, I spent every day I could at my local park, pushing myself to learn as much new stuff as possible, with a particular emphasis on the sillier tricks!
I started competing back in 2009, which was both a wonderful opportunity to skate with the guys whose videos I'd been watching on loop for years, and a harsh dose of reality - they were all just as incredible as they were in the videos, but, sadly, I was not. So, yeah, I got dead last - but that only made me want to try harder! Two years later, I returned for my second contest and got dead last in that again, but still had a blast!
In 2013, I founded LateTricks. At this time, freestyle had already given me so much, so I wanted to give something back. Back then, freestyle wasn't nearly as prominent as it was now and it was pretty hard to find contest runs, so I wanted to do what I could to change that.
Soon after, I was fortunate enough to start traveling the globe for contests, initially focusing on filming everyone's routines, whilst trying my best to put together a half decent run myself! It took a long time, but by 2023, I started to get the hang of it, earning my first proper podium finish at the Urban Rural Ride in France.
In 2024, 15 years after first competing, I won my first contest, the Slatina Skate Open, and finished the year as the WFSA’s top-ranking amateur. 2025 got off to a good start too, with a 1st place finish in Paderborn and the top-am placing in the Senior division at the Swedish Open.
Ultimately though, the placings have never been the most important thing about freestyle to me. For me, I'm still living my 2004 dream. Every event is my own personal BFSN Championship, hanging out with my friends, goofing around with dorky tricks, pushing my own limits and showcasing what freestyle means to me.
Skateboarding is truly such a unique thing. Every one of us is on our own journey, and all of our skating is so deeply personal to each of us - and yet, it feels like a team sport (where everyone is on the same team!). Crazy that something that started out as a hobby changed my life in so many ways, huh?
I'm super stoked to join the East Frisian Skateboards team, because it embodies so many of the things that I think skateboarding should be about. It's a team of passionate, driven and creative individuals, with a deep commitment to giving back to this awesome and wildly weird community we all love so much. Thanks for having me along for the ride!
Hope to see you all at a contest sometime soon - I'll be the guy behind the camera!
